Why do we sometimes act contrary to our values?

Something unwanted happens and instantly you have feelings that you describe as negative, protective or aggressive. You immediately begin thinking, trying to analyze the situation. Pay attention to your feelings and see if the thoughts are enlarging your feelings. If your feelings are being fueled by your thoughts then you may behave contrary to your stated values; you’ll probably even think your behavior is justified. How can you tell if you are using your thoughts this way? You don’t say what you should have said, or you regret what you did say, and you wish you would have handled the situation better. What is the root cause? You have a limiting belief that operates below your level of awareness and kicks in the instant it is triggered.
